Description of the activity

Atelier

Atelier refers to my pedagogical proposal, which arises after a long career as a professional dancer and as an emerging independent creator. It also honors the workshop as a place of experimentation and craft creation. For me, dance studio is like a workshop where we learn, practice and improve our technique/craft and find a creative identity. On this occasion, I will include choreographic materials that belong to the repertoire of Pina Bausch and Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui.

Through my observation of bodies currently in my work as a choreographer and teacher, I have noticed that new performers are changing their relationship with the body and the motivations that drive their movement. My passion is to continue to expand and deepen my perception of the world and to refine its physical expression through my own body and in collaboration with others. I have been accumulating knowledge of artists such as Pina Bausch, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, Malou Airaudo, Cristiane Boullosa, Dominique Mercy and Francesc Bravo. I want to pass on all these experiences to future generations of dancers. That's why I look for diverse and frequent meetings with dance and movement artists, to find new forms of communication. By creating and developing a shared physical language, we begin to question what we can do individually and collectively and how this can contribute to a more coherent and sustainable society. I don't want to hold on to what I've learned, but find new ways to share it.

TECHNIQUE, COMPOSITION AND MOVEMENT RESEARCH

In my methodology I propose a work based on the compositional factors of dance, according to the dancer, choreographer and pedagogue Jean Cébron (1927-2019): energy, form, space and rhythm. The Jooss-Leeder method inspires much of my classes. Respecting the different needs and circumstances of the group, I focus on breathing, repetition and opposing directional forces. At the end of the training we arrive at a sequence that contains the information studied during the session. Later, composition and improvisation exercises open up a dialogue with each performer. I seek to connect them with their unique personal expression and the creative potential of each one of them, beyond their physical abilities.

With these premises, we will work through play and pleasure in the detailed study of movement, gesture, writing, improvisation and body narrative. The dancers will connect with authenticity but will also be confronted with their self-demand and develop a greater awareness of their limits, in order to overcome them. Thus, through guidelines and keywords, the group explores a resilient, open and autonomous way of thinking around creativity. An invitation to self-sufficiency but also to a collective process to discover, question and expand.

Imparted by

Pau Aran

Born in Cerdanyola del Vallès (Barcelona), he began his career at the age of eleven through Latin American, standard, jazz, modern and classical ballet. He completed his studies at the Conservatorio Profesional de Danza 'Mariemma' in Madrid and later at the Folkwang Hochschule der Künste in Essen, before joining the ensemble of the Tanztheater Wuppertal - Pina Bausch in 2005, until 2020 as permanent member and later as a guest.

It is also in 2020 when he begins his artistic collaboration with Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, which continues to this day. From 2013, they begin their independent choreographic creations, generally developed through interdisciplinary collective work and creative workshops.

Among his works are Today you see me, tomorrow I will be invisible (2013); Three ways and Mimosa (2016); Notes on Life (2019, produced in Yokohama); Brocken and Ich bin nicht nur ein Körper, aber wenn du willst, kann ich tanzen (2019, both for Tanztheater Wuppertal); Lettre d´amour (2020, co-produced by the GREC Festival in Barcelona, with Consuelo Trujillo and Alberto Conejero); and Un cadavre exquis II (2022, premiered at the Teatro Español with José Troncoso). His current motivation is to continue developing expression through body language, focusing on the creation and pedagogy of contemporary dance.

The search for movement and his interest in the poetics of contemporary theatre-dance are represented in his projects. Committed to sharing previously acquired knowledge and experiences with the next generation of artists, Pau encourages self-discovery, simultaneously combining heritage and tradition with the passage of time and the transitory nature of the dance of the future.
